Award:Our student volunteer team claims 2023 SJTU Person of the Year!

Introduction

The University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI, JI hereafter) Yunnan Volunteer Teaching Team, dedicated to community service in underdeveloped regions of Southwest China’s Yunnan Province, has received the prestigious honor of SJTU’s 2023 Person of the Year.

According to a recent announcement of the SJTU Youth League Committee, the honor was awarded to 10 students or student groups following a comprehensive selection process involving recommendations from different colleges, institutes and schools.

Established in 2006, the JI Yunnan Volunteer Teaching Team, comprised of JI students, initiated their voluntary teaching mission in E’shan County, Yuxi City of Yunnan. Over the course of 17 years, the team has grown to include more than 700 students, extending their volunteer efforts to impact 32 schools in various locations across Yunnan, Hunan, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, and Anhui provinces.

As the leader of JI Miyuan Youth Volunteering Team from 2022.5-2023.5, I’ve also presided over the development of four major brands of activities during the tenure with 1000+ annual participation in JI. The annual number of views on the official account rose from 16,000+(2022) to 32,000+ (2023).
